An app developed for Davinci Salon & Spa to address client needs by assisting them to book appointments easily and also provide approximate quotation and estimate for the services they are acquiring about.

The challenge

Owning and running a salon can be a profitable business when you have a good management system. Like any business, it has many challenges. The top 3 challenges while running a salon include staff hiring, staff training, and customer satisfaction. One of the recurring difficulties regarding customer satisfaction is price distortion. In a bid to win more customers, some salons can lower their prices, making it almost impossible for them to make a profit. In these cases, t's advised to point out the value they are offering and take necessary measures to improve customer experience. It is also challenging to set fixed prices for some services, causing difficulty for the salon staff and mistrust for the customer. A set price might work for men's haircut, hair trim, eyebrow threading, manicure and pedicure, but it is not feasible for many other services.

EMPATHIZE

Observations

Conversations with the owners and occasionally visiting the salon allowed me to understand and observe the following in regards to new clients:
 

  • 3/5 clients would try and negotiate the price after receiving the service, even if it was previously communicated;

  • 4/5 clients change the scope of the service (mostly requesting more) after booking an appointment resulting in longer wait time or delaying the next appointment;

  • Occasionally, clients don't know what they want and don't communicate that well (mainly in terms of getting highlights, more complicated cut and colour services); 

  • Even though the hairstylists ask specific questions regarding hair length, hair condition and density while booking the appointment, but miscommunications and misunderstandings still occur. 
     

In returning customers,
 

  • most aren't open to price fluctuations; regardless of how long or short their hair is, the loyal returning customers often expect to pay the same price.

Idea Development

The idea we developed was to create an appointment booking app that would assist salon clients of 20+ years in booking appointments quickly. It will provide approximate quotations (estimates) for the acquiring services. We will also develop a similar platform to give the salon staff access to client profiles (i.e. last appointment, hair condition, style and cut history, colour dye information, hair products used and to be avoided, etc.) The client and the salon would have access to the info and would both receive estimates and appointment confirmations.
